How to Install Ceiling Tiles with Existing Crown Molding

1. Measure from the molding inward so you know exactly how much of the border row will need trimming.
2. Dry-fit your border tiles first. Molding is rarely perfectly square with the ceiling, so expect small adjustments tile by tile.
3. Cut border tiles to follow the molding line with a utility knife or scissors, depending on the tile material.
4. Glue full tiles first, working from the center of the room outward, then finish with the trimmed border pieces last.
5. Caulk the seam between the tile edge and the molding for a finished look if there’s any gap.

A Few Things to Know Before You Start

Older homes especially can have crown molding that isn’t perfectly level, so it pays to dry-fit a few border tiles across the whole run before gluing anything down. This lets you catch any dips or high spots early and adjust your cutting plan instead of discovering a mismatch halfway through the room. A caulk line between the tile and the molding hides small gaps and gives the ceiling a finished, continuous look once everything is painted.
