VIDEO: How to Remove Ceiling Tiles

Our clients often ask us about what would happen if they decided to remove the ceiling tiles at some point. As easy they are to install, ceiling tiles are also very simple to remove. We’ve created a short video to show you what happens when ceiling tiles are removed from the wall surface.

How to Remove Ceiling Tiles

1. Protect the floor and furniture below with a drop cloth, and wear eye protection.
2. Start at a corner or seam and slide a putty knife behind the tile edge.
3. Apply steady, even pressure to release the tile from the adhesive rather than pulling straight down.
4. Use a heat gun on stubborn spots where the glue is holding firm.
5. Scrape the ceiling clean of leftover adhesive once all the tiles are down.
6. Patch any marks before painting or installing a new tile pattern.

A Few Things to Know Before You Start

Tiles that have been up for a long time can be more brittle, so work in smaller sections and expect some to come away in pieces rather than whole. That’s normal and doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. Once the tiles are down, check the ceiling surface for any water stains or damage that was hidden underneath, since that’s much easier to address before new tiles or paint go up. A shop vacuum makes cleanup of old adhesive crumbs and dust much faster than sweeping.
